COMMISSIONING A PORTRAIT
Why Portrait Painting?
Aura: Throughout history those with something to say about their lives, Kings, Popes and Businessmen, said it in one of a kind commissioned paintings. The resulting cultural artifacts are relevant today not only as documents of individual lives, personal achievements and historical incidents, but as cultural treasures in and of themselves, demonstrating the refinement of cultural expression over centuries of development.
Longevity: Your legacy should not be disposeable! There are oil portrait paintings still on display that are six centuries old. Photographs fade, works of art on paper deteriorate with the paper they are done on, and digital formats degrade or become obsolete. One Life Fine Art uses only quality materials to preserve your legacy for the future.
Experience: One of life's singular experiences is the experience of having your portrait painted by a professional, a creative visionary, who sees your image in terms of your personality, achievements and an expression of your lifes story. Through the process of having a painting created, you discover what it is like to be a part of the creative process.
Emotion: Through the relationship between artist and sitter an emotional response is translated into paint, far surpassing the mere recording of light on a plane. The recipient of this gift feels how important they are to the giver, understanding the time and thought taken to create a unique personal and emotional gift.
How Do I Commission an Oil or Acrylic Portrait Painting?
It all starts here:
-
Take a look through the PORTRAIT GALLERY. Do you like the style of the work?
- Send an EMAIL or give me a call at (587)229-1348.
- We can make an appointment, get a brochure, or chat online or on the phone.
- When we have ironed out the details & PRICE, I take a deposit prior to the first meeting for the painting.
- I take reference photographs, discuss composition, and have the subjects of the portrait sit for a colour study.
- Back at the studio, I draw up a design and email it to you for confirmation.
- Near completion I email you a photograph of the complete painting for approval.
- Once dry, I notify you that the painting is ready and arrange for payment & delivery.
- After a years time, oi paintings should be varnished by the artist or a certified art conservator.
Do I (or all of the individuals) Need to Be Available for Reference?
No. It is possible to utilize a clear set of reference photographs; this can be the only option for gift portraits or posthumous portraits.
However, meeting the subject in person is always preferable, as the sitter gains a relationship and an experience of sitting for a portrait, as well as the finished portrait.
How Long Will It Take to Commission an Oil or Acrylic Portrait Painting?
Generally allow 4 months lead time for your portrait.
- After the design has been confirmed an oil portrait painting will normally be ready to pick up in 2 to 3 months.
- Acrylic portraits can be expedited due to shorter dry times, as little as 1 month from design confirmation.
- Alternatively, you may elect to present a gift certificate if appropriate.
What is Your Payment Policy?
A 50% deposit is required when booking the initial meeting for reference photography and color study.
The remaining 50%, plus any fees for additional services, are due upon final approval of the painting, prior to delivery.
Do You Provide Framing?
Generally the best person to choose the framing is the owner of the painting.
However, for a fee I can have the work framed as a convenience to the purchaser.
Do You Offer Gift Certificates?
Yes, gift certificates can be an excellent option in anticipation of a major event such as a wedding or the birth of a new baby!
