Minister Steven Blaney Chooses Powerful Portrait Depicting Afghanistan Ramp Ceremony
"The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced he has selected a heart-wrenching painting by Corporal Joel Green to hang in his office on Parliament Hill. The Minister invited Cpl. Green to witness the installation this morning of the artist's powerful ramp ceremony portrait. Entitled Slow March, the painting features four members of the Canadian Armed Forces carrying the casket of a fallen signal operator from Cpl. Green's unit, during a ramp ceremony in Afghanistan in 2007."

35 years of portraits of the Queen from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters
An interesting slide show of some of the official paintings done of Queen Elizabeth II. Most interesting is the personal anecdotes from artists who develop relationships with the sitter and become like members of the household over the course of multiple sittings.

At Christmas this year my mother asked me if anyone had ever painted a portrait of me. I had never really thought about it, but other than self portraits, the answer was no. So to the right is her portrait of me in the act of painting my own portrait.
This got me thinking about portraits of artists, wherupon I came across an article about Jason Schmidt, an environmental photographer whose practice consists mainly of photographing artists. I love Schmidt's photographs of visual artists who normally let their work represent them. |

Everyone loves a novelty, and "Paul" has the sales to prove it!
Paul is essentially a camera attached to a robotic arm which registers the differences in light and shade on a drawing surface. Paul does not compose or dicern. Paul does continue a conversation artists have been having with themselves since the invention of photography, what distinguishes an artist from an organic camera? Since Tresset asserts that he remains the artist I assume we will continue with the idea that it is the idea that separates the two entities, no mater how similar the end product may look.

An exhibition of renaissance portraiture on view at the Met proves that the hand painted image reigns supreme in the face of time. Six hundred years and the legacy of those who commissioned these portraits continues...lets see digital files, desktop publishing and video monitors match that sort of longevity!
